The Similarities and Differences Between Being an Amazon Executive and Founding/Leading an NGO

Amazon’s moniker when I started was “Work Hard, Have Fun, Make History.” For my 13+ years tenure in multiple roles, countries and businesses, it was completely true for me. In 2010 after adopting our daughter from Ethiopia, I wanted to give back to the world in a more meaningful way. I joined a NGO Board, then built fundraising vehicles and provided strategic advice to another, and in 2016 founded my own NGO. Along the way I was struck at the similarities of my Amazon role and my NGO efforts, both create solutions to complex challenges, as well as differences, like speed and resources. I took many of my Amazon learnings to my NGO – one I hope combines the best of both worlds.

This talk will share my insights and how they can be applied to improve any type of organization or project.

Ellenore Angelidis, Founder and Board President, Open Hearts Big Dreams Fund

Ellenore Angelidis is the founder and Board President of the Open Hearts Big Dreams Fund which is focused on increasing educational opportunities (literacy, tech and art) for kids in Ethiopia, her daughter’s birth country. She is currently taking a corporate career break to focus on her family, philanthropic work, public speaking and writing.

Previously, as a 13+ year employee of Amazon, Ellenore Angelidis was part of the company’s recent growth. Her last role was Director Kindle Content Risk Management. She was also Amazon's first Global Director of Diversity. Previously, she had business, product and legal roles for Amazon in Seattle, Luxembourg, and Paris – and is passionate about bringing change and forward momentum. Prior to Amazon, she received her legal start at the Chicago firm of Baker & McKenzie, then went on to manage complex litigation including regulatory matters, public relations and crisis management, as well as supported strategic sourcing for Sears, in Chicago, Illinois.

At home, Ellenore has a partner of 25+ years and 3 children, ranging in age from college to elementary school, plus a dog and a parrot. As a volunteer, Ellenore has held board and fund-raising positions with the not for profits WACAP and Ethiopia Reads.

Ellenore is also a published writer; on blogs (Ethiopian Ties and Balancing Career Family), and on-line magazines (Working Mother, Adoptive Families, InCulture Parent, and Women’s Essence). She also published her first children’s book, The Loud Prince, with colorful, diverse characters, through Kindle Direct Publishing.

She has built teams across a variety of disciplines, companies, and countries which gives her a uniquely broad perspective to share.

*If you're driving to Women's University Club, please give yourself a few extra minutes. The small parking garage on-site is for Club members only.  Please take advantage of a number of nearby parking garages.  One suggestion is the WAC parking garage. Members who register a non-member guest for a lunch meeting can receive a $10 discount code for a future lunch. To receive the discount, the non-member guest must be registered for a luncheon with a meal. You will be contacted following the event with details.    

WPGC Late Registration Policy - Late registrants or walk-in participants are not guaranteed meal requests. You will only be charged for meals if you are served.  To ensure your dietary needs are met, please register for luncheons in advance - registration closes at noon on the Thursday prior to our Monday luncheons.
